Brand new to the Cat Shack: Carl the Wonder Cat! Why is Carl the Wonder Cat, you ask?
This Maine Coon mix – with a purr you can hear through a closed door – was dumped by his owner in the summer of 2013. He was left to fend for himself. Smart cat that he is, he crashed a party, begging for food. The host named him Carl, after the guest who found him. The vet thinks he’s three or four years old.
For a year, friendly Carl was the neighborhood cat: everyone fed him, gave him warm places to sleep, took turns taking him to the vet (he’s neutered, dewormed, and UTD with shots), but no one could take him in permanently. This situation worked until Carl got sick.
Turns out, Carl had a vestibular (inner ear) condition that caused him to lose his balance. Past infections have damaged his inner ear so that he’s lost some of his hearing. Between his balance and his partial deafness, he can’t live outdoors any more.
Once he got treatment (prednisone and antibiotics), the inner ear infection cleared up completely and hasn’t come back. Carl doesn’t lose his balance any more. And it may never come back, now that he’s gotten the medical care he’s needed for so long. But if it does, inexpensive medications quickly take care of it.
Carl loves living inside with his foster family. He’s friendly with other cats, and loves to be petted and brushed. Unless you call him and he can’t see you, you’d never know anything was different about him. Carl’s not a lap cat, but he wants to be with you, especially at night, when you’re sitting around watching tv or reading. Then he’ll get up on the couch, tuck his paws under him, and doze. He’s got the big paws of a Maine Coon, and is very talkative – he chirps! And boy, does he love to play!
Carl is a Wonder Cat because he is smart enough to have lived outdoors for over a year with limitations that could have gotten him hit by a car or attacked by a dog. This sweet, lovable guy deserves a family that will love him and watch out for him.
Special Needs: Carl had an bad ear infection which affected his balance and made him partially deaf. Since he can fall, he can't be an outside cat. The outdoor photo was taken while he was a stray, before he came into foster care.
The Cat Shack rescue is all volunteer and the adopted cats are delivered to your home. Because we deliver the cats to you, we must restrict the adoptions of our highly adoptable cats to a 1 hour drive from the Allentown PA area. In certain situations, 'special-needs' cats, ferals and older cats will be adopted to homes at a greater distance then a 1 hour drive from Allentown PA. The first step in adoption is to...
