About Hershey

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • Rescue ID: TA
  • Housetrained: Yes

Hershey is a gorgeous, purebred, neutered male Saint Bernard very anxious to find his permanent home. He is 2 years old and is a very active and energetic Saint! Hershey longs for an owner he can bond with and trust, and a large fenced yard in which he can release his pent-up energy. He reportedly did well with cats and children in his original home, and has tested well when exposed to other dogs. Hershey is on the small side for a male Saint, currently weighing approximately 110 pounds. He still needs to mature and fill out, and will probably add another 20 pounds when he does so.

Hershey was dumped by his owner at a high volume, kill shelter and was extremely stressed by life there. He quickly became highly defensive and expressed his fear by becoming cage aggressive. The shelter staff were soon intimidated by this seemingly nasty dog and Hershey was scheduled for euthanasia.

Once pulled from the stressful cage environment, Hershey did much better and was a happy, friendly dog when introduced to his new foster Mom. Hours after arriving at his new foster home, he reacted aggressively again when two strangers suddenly appeared. Since that time, Hershey has relaxed considerably and has done well when introduced to other new people. He has never been aggressive with his foster Mom and is always delighted to see her. He barks for a very short time when he knows he is being left alone again but then settles down and remains quiet. He walks reasonably well on a leash, shows no aggression whatsoever regarding food or toys, and will sit and even go down on command at least some of the time!

It is clear that Hershey never received much training and socialization with people other than his family members as a puppy. He is wonderful with people he comes to know and trust, but is initially suspicious of strangers. He therefore requires a confident owner with previous large dog training/handling experience and the willingness to work with Hershey and seek professional assistance if required. Hershey wants and needs considerable attention, companionship and exercise. He also needs to be adopted by an owner who realizes he may never be able to be kenneled or cage confined.

If you are the right kind of person for Hershey and willing to invest some time and effort, you will be rewarded with a beautiful dog who will be loyal, active and happy. PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT The Cat Shack. Please contact Hershey’s foster Mom, Trinka Arnold, @ catnut@yahoo.com or 215-679-2661 for further information about this deserving fellow.

Adopting from The Cat Shack

The Cat Shack rescue is all volunteer and the adopted cats are delivered to your home. Because we deliver the cats to you, we must restrict the adoptions of our highly adoptable cats to a 1 hour drive from the Allentown PA area. In certain situations, 'special-needs' cats, ferals and older cats will be adopted to homes at a greater distance then a 1 hour drive from Allentown PA.

The first step in adoption is to...

Young KITTENS are always adopted in Pairs or to homes with other felines already in the home. Click here to read why kittens are happier with a buddy!

All cats are vaccinated, dewormed, tested and altered as part of the adoption contract. This basic care (and other vet work required to make our rescues healthy) is included in the $85 adoption donation!
