(Note- the picture of Cecil in his cat-tree was taken 4/14/05 and shows him after his recovery. The other picture of Cecil at the vet's office was taken during his recovery when his foot had finally started to heal.)
Cecil is a very lucky cat. This beautiful pure white, green eyed, talkative 1 year old was born to a feral(wild) mother behind an Allentown apartment complex. Fed by an elderly lady, he slowly came to trust people. This winter, the elderly woman started to notice many of the cats disappearing and she suspected a neighbor was hurting them. This suspicion was confirmed when she started to find badly injured and dead cats around the complex.
Then Cecil went missing for almost a week and the lady feared the worst. When he reappeared Cecil, was very thin and had a grisly open wound on his paw. The elderly woman called The Cat shack and we managed to trap the scared and injured cat and take him to our vet. The vet determined that Cecil had been caught in a terribly inhumane leg hold trap, probably for days, until he had ripped himself free. He lost all the skin on the top and part of the bottom of his paw. After so many days of being trapped in the freezing cold he also lost the end of his tail to frost bite.
It was touch and go for weeks, but our vet was able to save Cecil's paw! The skin has grown back and, although his paw looks a little funny and will never have hair grow back, he walks and runs with no noticeable limp. Cecil is VERY affectionate with people he sees often and will purr, rub and drool all over them. He will stand on his hind legs and wrap his paws around your arm to prevent you from leaving the room. He is very thankful. Cecil is initially shy with strangers so his new owner would have to understand that he will need some time to settle in before he will become a little loverboy.
Cecil loves other cats and tends to be passive with them. He plays with the other foster cats and is submissive with the "bullies" in the group. We think he would do well in home with another cat or two but he might be too nervous for a home with young kids.
We are thrilled that Cecil was lucky enough to escape the fate of many of his friends in the apartment complex. He suffered through a horrible time and has come a long, long way. Now all he needs is a safe, loving home!
Cecil's vet bill came close to $500- he was worth every penny but as a non-profit group this expense did help to depleted the group's funds. Any and all tax-deductable donations will help the group to help the next sick or injured cat get the vet work they need.
Cecil is altered, FeLV/FIV neg and up to date on all shots.
